Dr Okamaria Kanu
General Practitioner | MBBS, MRCGP (2023), FRACGP
Hello, I’m Dr Okamaria Kanu, a UK-trained General Practitioner and Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), with over 10 years of clinical experience providing patient-centred care. I trained and practised in the West Midlands in the United Kingdom before relocating to Australia, and I now enjoy caring for individuals and families in Ipswich, Queensland.
I am passionate about building long-term relationships with my patients and believe strongly in working with patients rather than on them. I take time to listen, explain medical conditions clearly, and involve patients actively in decisions about their care. My approach is holistic, practical and compassionate, with a strong emphasis on continuity of care and shared decision-making. I particularly enjoy working with individuals and families who value a collaborative, team-based partnership with their GP.
As part of comprehensive primary care, I provide support for general mental health concerns, taking a calm, respectful and practical approach while maintaining a strong focus on whole-person and family-centred health.
Since moving to Australia, I have developed a genuine curiosity and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. I am committed to providing respectful, culturally sensitive healthcare and to contributing—alongside the broader community—to improving health outcomes and reducing health inequities. Creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for all patients is central to my practice.
At my practice, patients can expect a warm, welcoming environment where trust, understanding and personalised care are prioritised. I value evidence-based medicine, preventive care and tailored management plans that reflect each patient’s individual needs and life circumstances.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy fashion, food, storytelling and spending quality time with my young family. I look forward to supporting my patients through all stages of life.
